Bathroom Functionality - Making the Most Out of Your Space

While bathrooms are often overlooked when it comes to home design and function, they should be the most functional spaces in your home. A cluttered bathroom quickly becomes a dirty one, but an organized space makes cleaning up after yourself much easier. Here are some tips for decluttering and organizing your bathroom:

Declutter

The first step to improving the functionality of your bathroom is to declutter. You may have thought that getting rid of clutter in your house would be a daunting task, but it's actually very simple. All you need is a garbage bag and some determination!

Start by removing all unnecessary items from your counters and drawers. Once those are out of the way, start sorting your items into three categories: “Keep”, “Trash” and “Belongs Elsewhere”. It's important to go through each of your items and sort out old or expired products: towels, cosmetics, hair products, skincare products, medicines, etc.

Once you've decluttered your bathroom and are left with a relatively empty space, it's time to organize!

Create a place for every item

When you're organizing your bathroom, it's essential to make sure everything has a home. You might find that some of your items have been thrown into piles or drawers and don't really have an assigned place for storage. To avoid this problem, start by organizing things by function. For example: don't just throw all your towels together in one big pile! Instead, try creating baskets or bins for each type of towel (bath, hand, wash cloths) and then placing them on shelves near where the corresponding item is used. If there are multiple types of lotion used at home (body lotion, hand lotion, face lotion), create a basket or bin for these products as well. This way they are easily accessed without having to dig through other items first.

Stackable bins are another great option because they take advantage of vertical space. When it comes to things like hair products and cosmetics, try organizing them by type and placing them in clear containers with labels on a shelf or in a cabinet. This helps keep everything together so you won't have to dig through drawers when you're looking for something specific.

Put together a drawer with your daily essentials

While you're in the process of creating this new essentials drawer, think about how to make it as functional and accessible as possible. For example, if you have a lot of hair products that are used on a daily basis, it might be helpful to create compartments within the drawer that are specifically sized for each item using wood or acrylic drawer dividers. This way, when it comes time to grab a hairbrush or hairspray in the morning, there's no need to rummage around and it makes cleaning up fairly easy!

This step is purely optional, but it’s a helpful way to keep track of your products and make them easier to find.

Add a functional space for towel storage

If you are looking for a place to hold towels, consider adding one of the following:

  • Towel rack: This is an excellent way to provide space for hanging your bath towels. These are found in many different styles and sizes, from simple wall-mounted racks to elaborate free-standing structures that look like pieces of art.

  • Towel hook: A towel hook is typically mounted on top of the door or next to it to hang up wet towels with ease; they are often found near showers or tubs so that people can easily reach them when they need them most!

  • Towel shelf: A freestanding or mounted shelf is useful for your space when organizing your towels. Towel types have a designated shelf to increase accessibility and keep your bathroom looking tidy.

Utilize the space under your sink.

A great way to keep your bathroom tidy is by creating an accessible storage system under your sink. This is done using hooks or baskets that hang on the inside of your cabinet doors, allowing you easy access without sacrificing too much cabinet space. Hooks a great way to store towels out of sight! Another way to store items under the sink is with vertical drawers or tiered sliding shelves for toiletries.

The bathroom is a place where we spend a lot of time, but it also tends to be one of the most unorganized spaces in the house. If you're looking to improve the functionality of your bathroom, then these tips help you do so quickly and easily. From decluttering to creating storage space under your sink or even just adding towel storage--it all makes maintaining a tidy bathroom a breeze!
