The Best Carpet Hard Use, Like Your Kids’ Playrooms

Perhaps you’ve been blessed to have extra space and even have a corner of your home as your own playroom for your children.

First, we’re excited for you, because this is a great use for an extra room and one we’re sure will create real and lasting memories in your home. Second, what’s the plan?

In recent years many spaces have been overrun by tile and for good reason. Tile is great for cleaning, it’s durable and it’s beautiful. But, it’s not a good solution for a playroom. Words you associate with playrooms are luscious, soft, pliable, safe — that’s not necessarily the words you associate with tile.

So, if it’s not tile, then the most sensible solution must be carpet. And the carpet is, of course, the most obvious solution. But even then, there are so many options to choose from.

Well, let us help. Below we’ve collected some ideas to help you process through the right carpet solution for your child’s playroom.

A few ideas to keep in mind: stain resistance, carpet pile, color.

Stain Resistance

An obvious attribute, stain resistance. Create the best plan you wish, at some point, this playroom will take the beating of outside dirt and debris, food clippings, drink spillage, and other events we’ll kindly refer to as “accidents.”

So, choose carpeting products that are known to be stain-resistant. Generally, carpeting made from nylon, polyester, or other synthetic materials are good playroom carpeting candidates. They are stain-resistant and very easy to clean.

Carpet Pile

A less obvious attribute, but something important to consider is carpet pile. Ok, we get it. Your initial response is, “what in the world is carpet pile?” Well, that’s a very good question and we admit that carpet pile is something of an industry term, but it is important to consider.

Simply put, a carpet pile refers to the density of fibers that a carpet has. The carpet is either flat (short pile) or shaggy (long pile). In simpler terms carpet pile is the thickness of a rug, measured from bottom to top.

Short piled carpets might resemble the harshness of tile, long piled carpets are obviously lusher, but then become more difficult to clean. For your child’s playroom find a goldilocks style solution, not too short, but also not too long, something just right.

Color

And finally, color. Choosing a carpet’s color is your opportunity to harness your inner artist. There are really two ways to go here: neutral or colors aimed for fun and matching.

A neutral color is a classic choice and will last the test of time, but colors bring levels of excitement and joy to a room. Something that might be difficult to quantify, but obviously meaningful to the children enjoying the space.
